Giving Thanks - Apple and Pumpkin Cake

So, I imagine an awful lot of people in the USA are taking it easy today after partying hard yesterday. I hope every person was able to connect with the emotion of the day in some way and to do something special to give gratitude for the many gifts in their life.

For me, "fall," or autumn (as we know it on this side of the pond), is all about processing the harvest from our abundant garden. With half a dozen apple trees, I'm always looking for new ways of consuming the 1,000 plus apples we regularly get. And with the fall-out from Halloween, I got creative and created a recipe for apple and pumpkin cake.

Basically, take your favourite fruit cake/banana bread recipe and add a small dish of pumpkin, cut into small cubes and steam for around five minutes to soften. I then add thinly sliced apple (including the peel) and steam for a couple of minutes more. Add the spices of your choice - mine are cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg. Cook slightly lower and longer - the texture will come out a bit more puddingy, and it will not keep as long because it will be quite wet.
Scrummy!

Don't Stop Believing

As a reward for being a wonderful fan, if you pop over to Amazon in the next couple of days, you get to download this completely novel novella at the pre-release price of only 99p/99cents.

On Friday it will put on a pound/dollar for a week, then up to the normal price.

Grab your preview copy here - and if you like it, I'd really appreciate a comment on Amazon - especially if you are a Journey fan - that would Rock Like A Journey Concert!

Here's the blurb:
A failing marriage. A union separated by distance. An accidental encounter. Can the Edinburgh Fringe Festival work its magic?

Kathy’s life is a mess. Sure, the job’s great and her home is to-die-for, but she spends way too much time on the midnight train to catch a few fraught hours with her musician husband, Jimmy.

While he’s away, Dan-next-door looks dangerously attractive.
On paper, Jimmy has it all. A talented wife, a successful rock band and nights in smart hotels. The gig at Edinburgh’s hottest arts festival is the culmination of years on the road, but the lack of harmony in his marriage makes him feel like a failure. He and Kathy fight to stay together, but events conspire to break them apart as they interact with colourful characters drawn to the Fringe.

In this rock-music-inspired tale, three love stories intertwine as each player is forced to take stock of their lives and discover what is truly important.

Any minute now ...

Ok, I just can't hold this in a minute longer.
My writer friends call their novels bookbabies, and right now, I feel like my waters are breaking.
Here's a huge clue. ===============================>

Just in case there's anyone out there who hasn't figured what a huge Journey fan I am, the title of this blog comes from my days as a Pitch Doctor on the ABNA forum. My catch-phrase when something worked well was "it rocks like a Journey concert."

Ok. Back into hiding. It is my very first NaNoWriMo after all and I have another 2K words to write.

Sunday 23 October 2016

Excited, Moi?

I know - it doesn't take much.
But my next release is based on something I wrote back in 2008 and has been sitting on the back burner since then. I promise you, there is nothing remotely like this out there, so I'm keeping it under wraps for the time being.

If you fancy getting in on the act in this one-of-a-kind project, it's a short-ish novella (around 14K words) with a strong musical connection. Message me on facebook if you fancy joining my awesome team of beta readers.

And - if you can recognise which city is in this picture, let me know (via a comment here, or the fb link above) and I'll put you in the hat to win the Ro Green book of your choice.

A heads-up. I'll be doing NaNoWriMo for the first time this year - it's kinda related to the next release, just a different band. Oops - was that too big a clue?

Is it me?

This isn't a rant. Who am I kidding? Of course it's a rant.
It all started when I was watching a show from my current Netflix obsession, "I Zombie."
Liv Moore (yep, that's right - not only a Zombie, but she works in a coroner's office!) randomly says 'I hate that phrase, "Make Love."' It kinda snagged me out of a show I'd always found well-written and highly entertaining as they discussed acceptable alternatives. While searching for the full line to quote, I was shocked by the sheer quantity of bile and ridicule for the phrase.
This triggered a ripple effect, crystallising a number of internal rants which have been building up for a while as my days repeatedly feature exposure to the toxic attitudes abounding in today's world. It feels like every aspect of life is geared toward reducing the amount of Love and replacing it with hatred, mistrust and fear. And let’s not forget rudeness and bad language.

Flick back to the 80’s and 90’s – working in British factories, I watched a slow and steady decline of manners. Men who’d once treated every woman venturing into their territory with old-world chivalry, no longer apologised when the odd swear-word slipped out. I put my hand up and admit to my part in the decline – in my effort to be treated as an equal, I frequently demurred at their apology. I would then assure them no offence was taken at the vulgar language, even though it made me cringe inside. Eventually, they believed me and the standards in the (mostly male) engineering office dropped. Not for me: although I will admit to the odd “sh*t” or “b*ggar,” I still can’t say the f-word in company. In the privacy of my own car, I am frequently driven to uttering atypical oaths.
I vividly remember the uproar when the f-word slipped out on a live TV interview in the 80's. For decades, anything remotely resembling a swear word was studiously beeped out on British TV. Nowadays, you are hard pushed to find a show without one per minute. I'll know my world has died when they infiltrate Disney productions.

My take on other gallantries, such as holding the door open for a member of the gentler sex, was mixed. Firstly, it’s a common courtesy I subscribe to – I still hold the door open for anyone approaching, and in particular, anyone following – nothing worse than having a door shut in your face. However, there are times it becomes awkward – I really disliked those who stood in such a position you were forced to squeeze past their bulk, or even worse, scrunch under (invariably sweaty) armpits. You know the type: cheap thrill takers who would never otherwise get that close to a woman; the ones who insisted on following you up the stairs to ogle your butt. The sort who forced women to take a stand against this slimy behaviour.

But what I really mourn is the death of Love resulting from this. The number of (increasingly vicious) retorts of “I’m not your love” which have stopped men from using that term of endearment, along with dear, pet and sweetheart, because they are too afraid of the potential litigation from women who deem it patronising. The conspiracy side of me is convinced it’s a plot by lizards to eliminate Love and replace it with Hate. As if to reinforce this theory, I recently came across the term “Hate-sex” in “Orange is the New Black.” A complete shocker. And revered as a good thing. I stopped listening to the news a long time ago when I realised the articles had swung from having just over half of the doom and gloom variety, to nothing but man’s inhumanity to man.
A mere murder is no longer headline news unless it involves multiple victims, gross perversion or children. Books and TV storylines don’t sell unless the body count is high enough to appease this apparent thirst for violence or the sex scenes are graphic (and frequent) enough to have been considered pornographic only a few decades ago. Anything less is considered too “Mary-Sue” for modern-day tastes.
Stop the world, I want to get off.
Oh look, they’re re-running "Charmed" on E4 – that’s about as much violence as I want to let into my life.

Kudos for Death Wishes

Those wonderful Book Viral reviewers think this book has "a genuinely original twist to Heaven that's simply sublime." I'm celebrating with a cheeky little offer - check it out with this massive 40% discount and see if you agree: Buy for $2.99 in US and UK.

Tantalisingly teasing, Rowanna Green rides the crest of the boom in angel stories with her novel Death Wishes. An offbeat love story told in Green's imitable style, the book's overarching theme about angels, people and love, is undeniably appealing and is the heartfelt centre to Green’s plot. She brings a touching vulnerability to Jo, whilst her nicely nuanced rendering of Mac allows for a quirky perspective on human life. Often easier said than done, Green comes up with inventive ways to work this into her narrative with timely levity and a genuinely original twist to Heaven that's simply sublime. It’s a story about two people whose different backgrounds present a serious obstacle and it's this that really provides the texture for Green’s novel.

A little different from her popular Hostage series, but wholly enjoyable, Death Wishes certainly deserves a place on your bookshelf and is strongly recommended.

"Three short stories spanning as many decades, they prove penetratingly absorbing. Green has the uncanny ability to rope readers in and make them care for her characters and this time it’s no different, delivering plots and narratives that vibrate with an impending sense of danger. Her dialogue does far more than simply push the plots along. It captures the way we might really think and talk in similar situations and in doing so taps into fears we’re not always aware of."

Thanks  so much, Guys. Your efforts on my behalf are so appreciated and I'm honoured for Big Bad Wolf to take pride of place on the Book Viral site (see piccy below).

And as for these quotes below: You've made my year decade millennium! Never one to shun a bit of hyperbole, me. Well that’s what you get with Sag rising and Jupiter conjunct ascendant (in Sag!) Nothing in moderation. Read the full review here.

"There are few writers whose voice is distinct enough as to be immediately recognizable, but Green is one of them. She delivers storylines which are uniformly solid whilst managing to keep her readers somewhat off-kilter, taking a seemingly impish delight in delivering plenty of surprises along the way, whilst an edgy narrative maintains an overall sense of suspense and heightened tension."

"An absolute must read for fans of the genre, especially those who appreciate great writing and originality. Another winner for Rowanna Green."

What BookViral says about Wolf in Sheep's Clothing:

"A twister of a read from beginning to end, Wolf In Sheep’s Clothing is sure to keep readers on the edge of their seats.

A fine thriller with a heady mix of romance, the plot is engaging but immaterial when the chemistry between lead characters is this good.

Intelligent and heavy on intrigue, Wolf In Sheep’s Clothing keeps suspense and tension at just the right level throughout.

A genuine pageturner which raises the bar, Wolf In Sheep's Clothing is highly recommended. A must read for the months ahead."

Even Harry was quiet, although both hands under the table suggested something other than maths was keeping him entertained.

“Miss, you’re the best.”
“Yeah right.” Stopping her eyes from rolling was the biggest challenge that day. “The best pushover.”

“I can’t do this job in this skin. I felt like I’d been dipped in chocolate or something – some of those women were positively salivating.”

“After all, when you’re faced with complete and total abstinence, who wouldn’t want to indulge in one last fling? If the lady was worth it.”

Her nerve endings, already on the lookout for trouble courtesy of the oak-aged Tempranillo, were gleefully dive-bombing to accompanying air-raid sirens going off in her head.

The spell didn’t just break; it shattered into a million pieces, each of which asked her what the hell she thought she was playing at before disappearing back into the ether.

Happy Mother's Day

"If I had ten glasses of wine and drank one, how many glasses of wine would I have left?" asked Mum.
"I think we're all acutely aware you wouldn't only drink one!" replied the kids.

Yep, my guys know the sort of maths I used to teach.

So wherever you are in the world, I hope Dads and offspring are treating the hard-working Mums to whatever it is that floats her boat. Even if that means she has control of the remote, or gets to spend a couple of hours doing exactly what she wants to.

Thank you to my lovely family.  ♥♥♥

3J Teaser - Cassie

So, here's some one-liners from Triple Jeopardy to whet your appetite. This "fun and engrossing read" will be FREE today, 28th February. Download in US or UK

Triple Jeopardy: Date Rape

Cassie jumped as the doorbell grated out its demanding buzz. If there had been any wine in the glass, she’d be looking at a big red stain on the beige carpet right now. Damn you, whoever you are – please go before he gets here.

This was a bit too weird. She didn’t normally do weird without intoxicants. The half glass of wine didn’t count – it was still caught on the M25 of her under-nourished arteries – not even within shopping centre distance of her grey matter yet.

Again with the courtesy, holding the car door open while her legs refused to do the elegant sliding-into-the-seat thing actresses and models achieved with no effort.

Cassie refused to shrivel in the heat of her own embarrassment. Breathe. Centre. Let’s try for a new start. What is it they say? Something about ‘the most interesting conversationalists are the ones who let you talk about yourself.’ We’ll try that.

“I’m sorry, that seat’s taken.” And even if it weren’t, you’re definitely not welcome.
“I know, I’ve just taken it,” he grunted, pleased with his own wit.

Kent’s grin backed up his wry comment. “She certainly seems to be able to take care of herself; obviously went to the same self-defence class you did.”

3J Teaser - Vicky

So, here's some one-liners from Triple Jeopardy to whet your appetite. If you want to know more, this "fun and engrossing read" will be FREE tomorrow, 28th February.
If you can't wait, buy it in US for $3.99, in UK for £2.81

Triple Jeopardy: Teacher's Pet

His vibrant presence dominated the room. Vicky wondered what made him so charismatic. Not looks: long limbed, scrawny and untidy.

Panic clutched at her limbs, dried her mouth & constricted her throat. It must be her turn; she’d barely said a word since the first lesson.

Vicky lifted her head for a split second. His eyes sparkled maliciously. She felt blood rushing to her cheeks, acting as a red rag to a bull.

The boy in front whispered, ‘Who’s a clever girl?’ She just caught her childish tongue before it stuck itself out at him. #college #romance

Drawn as she was to hands, she was surprised when, instead of the short, thick fingers she was expecting, his were long and elegant.

“You were in the top ten most wanted totty in freshers’ week last year. Sorry, that’s the ten most desirable new females.” #as_if_moment

She shouted for help. He laughed nastily. ”You don’t need any help, you’re doing fine, and anyway, there isn’t a soul for miles.”

3J Teaser - Tina

So, here's some one-liners from Triple Jeopardy to whet your appetite. If you want to know more, watch this space for announcement of the deal.
If you can't wait, buy it in US for $3.99, in UK for £2.81

Triple Jeopardy: Tina's Dilemma

Chloe was a delightful child: petite with a delicate, rosy-cheeked beauty, topped by golden curls any Miss Pears would have been proud of.

Justin: Tall, slim and obviously in charge. The sun raised highlights in his blond hair, giving him the appearance of a young Greek god.

Danny was vaguely familiar. Taller than me, dark haired and stocky, with spotty skin and a moody frown which made him appear tough.

Before the challenge was out, he leapt across the stream, knocking me to the ground. We rolled over as I struggled to fend off his punches.

Danny realised what was going on and pulled his mate off me shouting, “Stop it Justin, she’s a girl.”
“Doesn’t look much like one to me.”

In my dream, I was a slim, beautiful princess rescued by a prince. It wasn’t Justin, but a strong, handsome Danny who bent to kiss me.

The Big Bad Wolf is coming

No, not the Duck Sauce version - although the first time I heard this used in an advert on Planet Rock, I did smile wryly - just what you need to accompany lots of repetitive cuts with the sword.

But when I searched for a cool picture, I found a lot of well dodgy pix to go with the video - which seems to have been banned. Thankfully. I suspect this may backfire on me - but ...

Anyway, a coupla things.
1. If you want to be one of the first to get your sticky mits on the final part of this trilogy, I'm looking for more beta readers, so if you are interested, drop me a line at rowannagreen7@gmail.com and I'll send you a preview copy.

2. If you've no idea what this refers to because you've never met the Hostage books, the 1st one is on offer for the rest of the month, and the 2nd one will be FREE to download on a few days between now and end March, when BBW is released.
Here's the deets:

Fox Among Wolves:
Ginny’s dad had great advice about facing devils head on. “Think about the worst thing that could happen and figure out why you’re afraid. Get past that and the rest is easy.” There was no doubt about her worst fear. Alone in a house with six men, all of whom had just ogled her naked body, it was a complete no-brainer …

Wolf in Sheep's Clothing:
After an abusive relationship, the last thing Carrie needs is an undercover role infiltrating her Dad’s Welsh factory. Especially when her “husband” discovers her other guilty secret. But this man-mountain is exactly who she needs when faced with the business end of a gun. Thrills, humour & romance.

Who Stole January?

Normally, I blame it on ABNA, but yet again there wasn't one this year.
Nope, January was sacrificed on the altar of finishing a book. Big Bad Wolf, the third in the Hostage trilogy was a long time reaching the final post. Almost a year since 16th Feb 2015, but what a year!

Partly it's to do with not wanting to finish with these characters. I have loved living with them for so long; I first met Ginny in the late 70's when I was still in my teens. She's had a few makeovers since then to become the much wiser (and more worldly-wise) character who's finally laying to rest that peach-flavoured bath which got interrupted all those years ago. Although in her time-line, it's only a few months.

So, after completing the last scene on 24th January @ 12:44pm, I've spent an intense week trying to fix everything I broke when I wrote it. I'd just like to give a huge shout-out to my editor, Hannah Sullivan, for pointing out the obvious and helping me to re-structure and tighten. We've lost dirty-great wedges of back-story where this host of new voices up to the mic detailed their side of things in the previous two operations my ramshackle SAS team went through.
Thanks guys, good to know, but can we have some forward motion please? That's the trouble with co-stars who get boosted up to starring roles. They think you need to know about their journey to the top. Of course some bits are interesting, but come on guys, keep it short and sweet.

Ok, back to the sword-work. Thought I'd give you a bit of a teaser by revealing some of the fabulous cover the wonderful Rebecca Sterling has got going on. Can you guess which country they end up in? What would I do without these magical, talented ladies around me?
